1)   Understand the TOEFL test format: It is very essential that we understand the test pattern and prepare accordingly. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Exam is conducted both as paper based and internet based. If your country offers only internet based test, you need to prepare for the same. ETS has very clear standards about the format and this should be read and understood well before preparing for the exam.
2)   Understand the scores or the bands required: This is keeping your aim in mind before starting your study. Also make some homework on what are the colleges you wish to try and what is their requirement in TOEFL.
3)   Concentrate only on academic English: TOEFL is looking at academic english which we read in text books and newspapers. So, it is always preferable that candidates avoid slangs and read textbooks, journals and encyclopedias to improve vocabulary and sentence formation.
